Rolex Air-King 2022 Review: The Most Underrated Modern Rolex

The Rolex Air-King has always been the odd sibling of the Rolex family. Launched in 1945 to commemorate British RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain, it became the entry point into the Rolex catalog for decades. Then in 2016 it returned from a brief hiatus wearing a strange Milgauss case with a polarizing 3/6/9 dial, and in 2022 Rolex quietly gave it a comprehensive refresh that, in this reviewer’s opinion, fixed everything the 2016 version got wrong.

The 2022 Refresh: Reference 126900

At Watches & Wonders 2022, Rolex introduced reference 126900 with changes that seemed minor on paper but transformed the watch on the wrist. Crown guards were added, the case proportions were cleaned up, the “5” was finally added to the minute track (it was missing on the 2016 116900), and the bracelet received the Oysterlock safety clasp with Easylink 5mm extension — a feature previously reserved for sports models.

Specifications at a Glance

  • Reference: 126900
  • Case: 40mm, 904L Oystersteel, crown guards
  • Dial: Black with green minute track, yellow “Rolex” coronet, Arabic 3/6/9 numerals
  • Movement: Caliber 3230, Chronergy escapement, 70-hour power reserve
  • Magnetic shielding: Soft iron cage (inherited from Milgauss platform)
  • Water resistance: 100 meters
  • Bracelet: Oyster with Oysterlock and Easylink
  • Retail price (2022): $7,200 / (2026): $7,400

On the Wrist

The Air-King wears smaller than the 40mm spec suggests. The lugs are shorter than the Submariner’s, the bezel is smooth and narrow, and the dial opening is generous, which creates a visually larger face without overwhelming a smaller wrist. On a 7-inch wrist it sits flat and unobtrusive. The dial is pure tool-watch legibility: Chromalight lume glows blue for eight-plus hours, the minute track dominates the periphery for pilot-grade reading, and the Arabic 3/6/9 layout is a direct callback to the Explorer’s heritage.

The Anti-Magnetic Story

Because the Air-King uses the Milgauss case architecture, it inherits the soft iron Faraday cage and is the only non-Milgauss Rolex rated for serious magnetic resistance beyond what the Parachrom hairspring provides alone. With the Milgauss discontinued in 2023, the Air-King is now arguably the most anti-magnetic watch in the current Rolex lineup — a fact almost no marketing material mentions.

The Caliber 3230 Movement

The 3230 is Rolex’s newest time-only automatic, debuting in 2020 on the Oyster Perpetual and Explorer. Key features include the Chronergy escapement (15% more efficient than a standard Swiss lever), a Parachrom blue hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers, and a 70-hour power reserve — meaning you can take it off Friday night and pick it up Monday morning still running. Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification guarantees -2/+2 seconds per day, double the COSC standard.

What Makes the Air-King Underrated

Three things:

  1. Price. At $7,400 retail, the Air-King is the cheapest 40mm steel Rolex on a bracelet with a 70-hour movement. You get most of what makes a Submariner special, without the waitlist.
  2. Availability. Unlike the Submariner, GMT-Master II, or Daytona, the Air-King can actually be purchased at authorized dealers in most markets within a reasonable timeframe.
  3. Uniqueness. No other Rolex has this dial. The Arabic 3/6/9 with yellow coronet and green accents is distinctively aviation-themed in a catalog otherwise dominated by diving, racing, and exploration cues.

What’s Not to Love

The Air-King isn’t perfect. The dial divides opinions — some collectors find the large “05” at the top of the minute track (the only two-digit numeral) awkward. The lack of a date window frustrates travelers. And the Oyster bracelet, while comfortable, lacks the Glidelock micro-adjust found on dive models.

Pricing and Market Performance

The 2016 reference 116900 launched at $6,200 and currently trades on the secondary market around $6,500-$7,200 — essentially flat over seven years, which is actually a strong showing for a Rolex that wasn’t speculation-fueled. The 2022 reference 126900 retails at $7,400 and trades between $7,500 and $8,800 on the gray market depending on completeness. Neither version has seen the wild price swings of the Daytona or GMT-Master, which is part of the Air-King’s quiet charm.

FAQ

Is the 2022 Air-King available at retail?

More available than other sports Rolex models, yes. Authorized dealer wait times typically run 3-9 months as of 2026 versus 2+ years for a Submariner Date.

Does the Air-King have a date window?

No. It’s a pure time-only watch, which is part of its cockpit-inspired simplicity.

Is the caliber 3230 serviceable outside Rolex?

Any Rolex-trained watchmaker can service it, but parts availability outside the Rolex Service Center network can be limited on newer calibers.

How does the Air-King compare to the Explorer 36?

The Explorer is slimmer, more classic, and uses the same caliber 3230. The Air-King is larger at 40mm, has crown guards, and wins on anti-magnetic performance. Both retail within $400 of each other.
