Four Bezels, Four Identities

The Datejust is Rolex’s most configurable watch — and the bezel is the single biggest design decision. A smooth bezel reads sporty and modern; a fluted bezel reads classic and dressy; a diamond bezel reads luxury and statement. Each transforms the same 36mm or 41mm case into a fundamentally different watch. Here’s what you need to know.

Smooth Bezel (Domed Steel)

The smooth bezel is a single piece of polished 904L Oystersteel with a slightly domed profile. It’s the sportiest, most understated Datejust configuration — pairing naturally with the Oyster bracelet for a look that’s closer to an Explorer or Oyster Perpetual than a traditional Datejust. The smooth bezel catches less light than the fluted version, making it more subtle in photographs and formal settings.

Best with: Oyster bracelet, dark dials (black, blue, slate). Price impact: Lowest-cost Datejust config ($8,250 for DJ36, $9,500 for DJ41).

Fluted Bezel (18ct White Gold)

The fluted bezel is the original Datejust bezel from 1945. It’s machined from a single piece of 18ct white gold (never steel) with precisely angled ridges that create a sunburst light-catching effect. The fluted bezel is why the Datejust looks like a Rolex and not just any round watch — it’s the visual DNA of the collection.

The white gold material is functional, not just decorative: gold is softer than steel, so the fluted ridges can be machined to sharper angles with more precise geometry. The result is a bezel that reflects light in ways impossible with harder steel.

Best with: Jubilee bracelet, lighter dials (silver, champagne, mint). Price impact: +$1,300 over smooth ($9,550 for DJ36, $10,800 for DJ41).

Diamond Bezel (18ct White Gold + Diamonds)

The diamond bezel uses the same white gold base as the fluted, set with a single row of round brilliant diamonds. The diamonds are factory-set by Rolex’s in-house gem workshop using IF-VVS stones, D-G color — the highest quality Rolex uses across any product. The result is a bezel that sparkles constantly without the “blingy” appearance of aftermarket diamonds (which are typically lower quality and set less precisely).

Best with: Jubilee or President bracelet, mother-of-pearl or pave dials. Price impact: +$5,000-$10,000 over fluted depending on diamond count and size.

Engine-Turned Bezel (Discontinued)

The engine-turned (also called “Thunderbird”) bezel featured a crosshatch pattern on a bidirectional rotating bezel. It was discontinued from the Datejust in the early 2000s and now only appears on vintage references. Pre-owned Datejusts with engine-turned bezels trade at modest premiums over smooth-bezel equivalents due to rarity and vintage appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the bezel after purchase?

Rolex can swap bezels at their service centers, but it’s expensive ($1,500-$3,000+ for a fluted bezel) and requires sending the watch to Rolex. Some third-party watchmakers offer bezel swaps using genuine Rolex parts. If unsure between smooth and fluted, buy fluted — you can always dress it down with an Oyster bracelet, but you can’t make a smooth bezel look dressy.

Is the fluted bezel real gold?

Yes — solid 18ct white gold, not plated. This is why the fluted bezel adds ~$1,300 to the price. The gold content alone is worth $500-$800 at material value; the rest covers machining and assembly.
