The First Size Change in 61 Years
From 1959 to 2020, every Rolex Submariner was 40mm. Then Rolex increased it to 41mm — the first case-size change in six decades. “It’s just 1mm” was the immediate reaction. But the 2020 Submariner (Ref. 126610) isn’t a 116610 with 1mm added — it’s a completely redesigned case, bracelet, and movement platform that happens to be 1mm wider.
What Actually Changed
| Spec | Old (116610, 40mm) | New (126610, 41mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | 40mm | 41mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 48.1mm | 47.5mm (SHORTER!) |
| Thickness | 12.5mm | 12.5mm (same) |
| Lugs | Wider, squarer | Slimmer, more tapered |
| Bracelet | 20mm throughout | 21mm at case → tapers to 18mm |
| Movement | Cal. 3135 (48h) | Cal. 3235 (70h) |
| Bezel | Cerachrom (same) | Cerachrom (same) |
| Crown guards | Wider | Slimmer, more integrated |
The Paradox: 1mm Bigger But Wears Smaller
The 126610 has SHORTER lug-to-lug (47.5mm vs 48.1mm) and slimmer lugs than the 116610. This means: despite being 1mm wider in diameter, the new Sub actually hugs the wrist MORE closely than the old one. The broader bracelet (21mm at case) fills the space between the lugs more completely, creating a more integrated, less “floating” appearance on wrist.
Most owners who’ve worn both say the 126610 is more comfortable despite being technically larger. The redesigned case geometry — not the 1mm — is the real difference.
Which to Buy
- 126610 (41mm, current): Better movement (70h vs 48h), more comfortable fit, available new at ADs, stronger long-term value (current production = parts support for decades)
- 116610 (40mm, discontinued): Slightly smaller wrist presence, the last 40mm Sub (collector significance), pre-owned at $10,500-$12,000 (below the 126610’s secondary). The “value” buy.
