Blancpain Fifty Fathoms: The Original Dive Watch That Inspired the Submariner

The Dive Watch Debate: Who Was First?

In 1953, two dive watches appeared that would define the entire category: the Rolex Submariner and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Which came first? The debate has raged for 73 years. The evidence: the Fifty Fathoms was delivered to the French Navy’s combat divers (Nageurs de Combat) in early 1953, possibly before the Submariner’s official commercial launch at the Basel Fair in April 1953. Blancpain has the stronger claim to “first,” though Rolex disputes the chronology.

Regardless of who was technically first, the Fifty Fathoms established the template that ALL dive watches would follow: rotating bezel, luminous markers, water-resistant case, and black dial for maximum underwater contrast.

The Captain Maloubier Story

The Fifty Fathoms was commissioned by Captain Robert “Bob” Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud of the French Navy’s combat diving unit. They needed a watch that could: survive 50+ fathoms (91 meters) of depth, display elapsed time via a rotating bezel, remain legible in dark water, and resist the corrosive effects of saltwater. They approached Blancpain CEO Jean-Jacques Fiechter — himself an avid diver — who created the Fifty Fathoms in response.

The original 1953 Fifty Fathoms featured:

  • Case: 42mm (enormous for 1953 — most watches were 33-36mm)
  • Bezel: Rotating, with a locking mechanism to prevent accidental movement underwater
  • Crystal: Double-sealed, anti-magnetic
  • Depth rating: 91 meters (50 fathoms)
  • Movement: Automatic (essential — divers couldn’t wind a watch underwater)

120-Hour Power Reserve

The Cal. 1315 is the Fifty Fathoms’ hidden weapon: 5 full days of power reserve from three mainspring barrels stacked in series. Take the watch off Monday morning and it runs until Saturday morning. This is double the Rolex Submariner’s 70 hours and triple the industry standard of 40-48 hours. For a diver who might not wear the watch for several days between missions, 120 hours is genuinely functional.

The Sapphire Bezel

Blancpain uses a sapphire bezel insert — not ceramic (Rolex) or aluminum (Tudor). The sapphire is scratch-resistant (Mohs 9, same as the crystal) and allows Blancpain to place luminous material underneath the transparent sapphire, creating a glowing bezel ring in darkness. This is a unique approach that no other brand replicates.

The Fifty Fathoms wins on movement (120h vs 70h) and bezel innovation (sapphire). The Submariner wins on size (41mm is more wearable than 45mm), price (both retail and secondary), and brand cachet. The Fifty Fathoms is the connoisseur’s diver; the Submariner is the world’s diver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 45mm too big?

For wrists under 7.5″: yes, it’s a lot of watch. Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe at 38mm and 43mm as smaller alternatives with the same dive-watch DNA but more wearable proportions. The 38mm Bathyscaphe is the “daily wearer” Fifty Fathoms.

Why is the Fifty Fathoms less famous than the Submariner?

Marketing and production volume. Rolex produces ~1M watches/year with massive advertising. Blancpain produces ~30,000/year with minimal advertising. The Submariner’s fame is a function of exposure, not superiority.
