Two Brothers, Two Personalities
The Patek Philippe Nautilus and Aquanaut are siblings — both luxury steel sports watches with integrated designs from the same manufacture — but they couldn’t be more different in personality. The Nautilus (born 1976, designed by Gérald Genta) is the establishment: angular, serious, status-conscious. The Aquanaut (born 1997, designed by the Patek in-house team) is the younger rebel: rounded, relaxed, adventurous. Choosing between them says as much about your lifestyle as your budget.
Design DNA
Nautilus (Ref. 5811/1G)
The Nautilus is defined by its octagonal bezel with rounded “ears” — Genta’s porthole-inspired shape. The horizontal embossed dial texture, the integrated bracelet with wide flat links, and the fold-over clasp create a watch that reads as architectural. It’s geometric, precise, and assertive on the wrist. The current 5811 is 41mm in white gold with a blue-green gradient dial.
Aquanaut (Ref. 5167A)
The Aquanaut softens every angle the Nautilus sharpens. The case is a rounded octagon (subtly different from the Nautilus’s angular version), the dial has an embossed checkerboard pattern (vs. the Nautilus’s horizontal lines), and the standard strap is a “Tropical” composite rubber — not a metal bracelet. The Aquanaut was explicitly designed for active lifestyles: travel, sport, outdoor adventure.
Movement Comparison
| Spec | Aquanaut 5167A | Nautilus 5811/1G |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Caliber 324 SC | Caliber 26-330 SC |
| Type | Automatic | Automatic |
| Power Reserve | 45 hours | 60 hours |
| Frequency | 28,800 vph | 28,800 vph |
| Thickness | 3.3mm | 3.2mm |
| Patek Seal | Yes | Yes |
The 5811’s Caliber 26-330 SC is Patek’s newer, thinner movement with a 60-hour reserve (vs 45 for the 324 SC). Both carry the Patek Philippe Seal, guaranteeing -3/+2 seconds per day accuracy — stricter than COSC. The 26-330 represents Patek’s current-generation technology and will eventually replace the 324 across the lineup.
Size and Wearability
| Dimension | Aquanaut 5167A | Nautilus 5811/1G |

| Water Resistance | 120m | 120m |
| Weight (approx.) | 75g (rubber strap) | 180g (gold bracelet) |
The Aquanaut on its rubber strap is featherweight — you genuinely forget you’re wearing it. The Nautilus on the gold bracelet is substantial and present. Both are thin enough to slip under a shirt cuff.

The Aquanaut 5167A offers the cheapest entry into Patek’s sports watch lineup at ~$25,000 retail — about half the 5811’s price. On the secondary market, it’s also more “affordable” at $45,000-$60,000 vs the Nautilus’s $80,000+. For many collectors, the Aquanaut represents the smarter buy: 80% of the Nautilus experience at 50-60% of the cost.
Which One Suits Your Life?
- Choose the Nautilus if: You wear suits regularly, value architectural design, want the “I’ve arrived” statement, and don’t mind the weight of a gold bracelet on your wrist all day.
- Choose the Aquanaut if: You travel frequently (the rubber strap handles humidity and sweat), you prefer sporty-casual aesthetics, you want to wear it during actual physical activity, or you want to enter the Patek sports watch world at a lower price point.
The Strap Factor
This is the underrated difference-maker. The Aquanaut’s Tropical composite strap is one of the best rubber straps in watchmaking — textured to match the dial’s checkerboard, fitted with a fold-over clasp, and genuinely comfortable in heat. It makes the Aquanaut the superior travel and summer watch. The Nautilus bracelet is stunning but heavy, and metal bracelets in tropical heat can be uncomfortable.
Note: a metal bracelet for the Aquanaut does exist on the 5167/1A (secondary market only), and Patek released a rubber strap option for certain Nautilus references. But by default, the Aquanaut = rubber and the Nautilus = bracelet, and each is designed to be worn that way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Aquanaut a “lesser” Patek than the Nautilus?
No. Both carry the Patek Philippe Seal, both are finished to the same standard, and both hold their value exceptionally well. The Aquanaut is younger and sportier — not lesser. Many serious collectors actually prefer it for daily wear.
Which has better resale value?
The discontinued Nautilus 5711 has the highest absolute resale premium. Among current-production references, the Nautilus 5811 holds a higher premium over retail than the Aquanaut 5167A. However, the Aquanaut has lower entry cost, so percentage returns can be comparable.
Can I swim with either watch?
Both are rated to 120m water resistance — swimming, snorkeling, and shallow diving are fine. The Aquanaut’s rubber strap is more practical for water activities than the Nautilus’s metal bracelet (which can trap sand and saltwater in the links).
Do you carry Patek superclones?
Yes — our Patek Philippe collection at DR.WATCH includes both Nautilus and Aquanaut references with Swiss automatic movements, correct case proportions, and the signature dial textures. Each ships free worldwide with our 1-year warranty. Also read our 5711 discontinuation story.
