Deeper Than 99.999% of the Ocean
In 2022, Omega released the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep — a production dive watch rated to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). To put that in perspective: the average ocean depth is 3,688 meters. The Titanic sits at 3,800 meters. The Ultra Deep can go 2,200 meters PAST the Titanic and keep ticking. Only the Mariana Trench (10,935m) exceeds its rating — and Omega has already sent a prototype there too (the Ultra Deep Professional, attached to Victor Vescovo’s Limiting Factor submersible in 2019).
How 6,000m Is Achieved
At 6,000 meters, water exerts 600 atmospheres of pressure — 600 times surface pressure, or ~8,820 psi on every square centimeter. Omega engineered three innovations:
- O-MEGASTEEL: Omega’s proprietary steel alloy — harder and more corrosion-resistant than 316L, developed specifically for extreme-depth applications. The case is machined from a single block.
- Mach reduction: The caseback is bonded directly to the case without a traditional gasket ring — eliminating the weakest point in conventional dive-watch construction. The term “Mach” refers to the reduced number of components in the pressure-bearing structure.
- Crystal geometry: The sapphire crystal is conically shaped — thicker at the center, thinner at the edges — distributing pressure load more efficiently than a flat or domed crystal.

45.5mm: Can You Wear This?
At 45.5mm × 18.12mm, the Ultra Deep is a LARGE watch. For perspective: the Rolex Submariner is 41mm × 12.5mm. The Ultra Deep is 4.5mm wider and 5.6mm thicker. On wrists under 7.5 inches, it will overhang. On 8″+ wrists, it wears like a substantial but not absurd dive instrument.
The O-MEGASTEEL bracelet helps: it’s lighter than conventional steel, reducing the weight penalty of the oversized case. And the taper from 22mm at the lugs to 18mm at the clasp creates visual slimming.
Ultra Deep vs Rolex Deepsea vs Submariner
| Watch | Depth | Size | Weight | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Omega Ultra Deep | 6,000m | 45.5mm | ~185g | $11,500 |
| Rolex Deepsea | 3,900m | 44mm | ~220g | $14,800 |
| Rolex Submariner | 300m | 41mm | ~155g | $10,250 |
The Ultra Deep goes 2,100m deeper than the Rolex Deepsea, is lighter, and costs $3,300 less. On specifications alone, it dominates. The Rolex wins on brand cachet and secondary market value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does anyone actually need 6,000m?
Humans: no. The deepest human dive (saturation) reached ~701m. The Ultra Deep’s 6,000m rating is for submersible attachment, scientific instruments, and engineering bragging rights. Buy it because you respect the engineering, not because you’ll use the depth.
Is the Ultra Deep a good daily wearer?
If your wrist is 7.5″+: it’s a viable (if large) daily watch. The METAS certification ensures excellent accuracy, and 150m would be sufficient for any daily water exposure. At 8,820 psi rating, it’s the most overbuilt daily wearer on Earth.
